It has nothing to do with a ‘you vs. me’ mentality. The yellow line is but one facet of my room. The over lying focus is on respect – respect for each other, for the materials, for anyone who walks into my room etc. There are many ways to teach respect and as you pointed out, the best one is to lead by example. The yellow line is about boundaries and personal space. The majority of our students do not have a good understand about social skills and the importance of them, so teaching about personal space/respect is as much needed as teaching critical thinking skills. (I’m talking from a POV as a teacher in an inner city middle school art room where 95% of our students are free/reduce lunch, 24% sped, 45% FLEP) Think of it this way, we do not go to work and riffle through our coworkers desk or their file cabinets. Why is that? Because it is something we have inherently learned over time either by being observant or being taught or both. We, as educators, are seeing a rise of students who are unclear or do not understand the important of social skills, like personal space and respect. The yellow line acts as a visual reminder that they should ask before they take and it does exactly that – pausing them long enough to remember to ask. This is not the same as ‘you vs me’. We live in a very visual age and just telling kids something doesn’t reach out to all of them. We are being asked to differentiate our instruction in the classroom to help engage all types of learners. This is but one of the ways I have come up with to differentiate personal boundaries. No soldiers allowed ;-)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18173351655298081197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935723781669762139.post-75336962616405926852012-02-18T18:26:05.375-05:002012-02-18T18:26:05.375-05:00I question why it is necessary to send such strong...I question why it is necessary to send such strong me vs. you messages. If a student doesn't respect you, I surely hope it doesn't cause you to disrespect them. Children shouldn't have to earn our respect. We should give it freely and they will follow our example. Couldn't you engage them in a conversation about the importance of respecting boundaries without the yellow line? I imagine, if the room is truly respectful and engaging, they'll feel no need to visit your desk, anyway. you say everything in your room comes down to respect, but whose version and for whose benefit? My students respect me because I treat them as people, not my soldiers. Nothing could be more respectful.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935723781669762139.post-957334740321130602011-01-03T13:21:23.964-05:002011-01-03T13:21:23.964-05:00Seems so!
